Now is the time to do what you’ve been putting off until the time is right. Make a plan to ensure that your family is taken care of and there is no question what your wishes are.
- Make a Plan for Your Assets. Believe it or not, you have an estate. In fact, everyone does. Your estate is comprised of everything you own— your car, home, other real
estate, checking and savings accounts, investments, life insurance, furniture, and personal possessions. No matter how large or how small, everyone has an estate and needs to make a plan for it.
- Make a Plan for Your Children. If you have minor children, a Will alone may not be enough to protect them. Have you considered who your children would go to in the
event that both you and your spouse do not make it home? Do you have family in the area, or is your family all out of state? And if you do have family in the area, are there family members you
prefer your children to go to?
- Make a Plan for Your Potential Incapacity. Do you know what would happen to your family and assets if you were incapacitated, whether from an accident or illness?
Incapacity can be temporary - you are expected to recover eventually; or it can be the start of a long event that ends in your death. Incapacity can last for many years and if you do not make a
plan, your family may need to go to court to help make financial and health care decisions for you.
- Make a Plan to Pay No Estate Taxes. Do you know if there will be taxes on your estate and how you heirs will pay for them? You’d be surprised how small an estate can
be to be at risk for estate taxes. You don’t have to be rich to think about this.
- Make a Plan. As parents we scrutinize every decision we make regarding our children. What school? Which car seat? Which babysitter? Organic or is non- organic ok? With so
many immediate concerns, consulting with an attorney and creating a personalized estate plan can get thrown on the back burner. However, creating a personalized estate plan should not be neglected. A
personalized estate plan ultimately ensures that should unexpected events occur to render you incapacitated or cause you to pass away, that your children and loved ones will still have the benefit of
your financial and personal care plan for them.
